Our first port of call after leaving Rome was Messina, Sicily. The place wasn’t why we chose the cruise but I am so glad we visited the city. It is something straight out of an Italian movie and highlights included:
The mechanical cathedral clock that amazingly we timed just right to see it move at midday. The lion roars, the rooster crows and as it was between Easter and Pentecostal Weekend, Jesus rises from the dead. So, so beautiful!
We enjoyed an authentic Italian meal, everyone having “real” pizza for the first time and I even tried out some true Sicilian dishes.
Our afternoon stroll took us up hundreds of stairs to see the full view of the Messina harbour and then back to the boat we went via Poseidon’s statue and had gelati – as one does!
