So my Forty Things before Forty dream of eating at one of the World’s Best Restaurants came true when we were in Peru. Central Restaurant in Lima is voted the no.5 Best Restaurant in the world and is owned and run by Chef Virgilio Martínez who has led a new generation of Peruvian cooks.

The concept of the restaurant is an exploration of Peru’s biodiversity, and Central takes diners on a journey through every altitude, from 20 metres below sea level to 4,100 metres above it, in 17+ courses. We opted for the 11 courses tasting menu and it was an incredible colourful journey through Peruvian cuisine, taking in some better known dishes like ceviche while presenting many weird and wonderful fruits, vegetables and herbs that we had never heard of before – let alone be able to pronounce.

And yes this is what you think it is… piranhas!

Central not only had the most amazing food, presentation and atmosphere but their staff were incredible! They shared the stories behind each dish and halfway through with no prompting on our side offered to change Zara onto their a la carte menu (she was a bit put off by the piranhas!) and then we were all a little jealous when her special dessert arrived!

And if our visit couldn’t get any better, we were invited into the kitchen!
