Years ago I did quite a bit of research around the Belmond hotel La Residencia in Deia, Mallorca. I actually had it on my shortlist for celebrating my 40th birthday before I decided to have it in Southern Africa. The hotel is really beautiful – even better than one sees in photographs, and the town in Deia is just as picturesque: all the little houses are made of stone and blend into the mountains all set along stone terraces. As the hotel is closed (hopefully going to open May 17th) we were able to still stay in their little 3 bedroom villa just the opposite side of the hill. The villa is so lovely, and besides the beautifully decorated bedrooms and bathrooms (just like I would imagine the hotel’s ones to be) we had the use of a private lounge, dining room, kitchen, terrace and a heated swimming pool with a magnificent view of the town and sea. As we were staying ten days, this would now going forward definitely be my preference and naturally during Covid a far better option.

We were the first guests to stay with the hotel for over a year and were so so spoilt by the staff: we had the Head Concierge looking after us, organising our every move and sharing so many great stories about the town, the island and way of life. We were then also treated everyday by the Head Chef looking after all our meals, making every dish an adventure and also sharing all his secrets about the cuisine and culture of Mallorca.

Our stay with the Belmond this way was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we feel so lucky to have experienced their warmth and hospitality in such a personal and memorable way. And I am hoping to return to the hotel itself, so as to experience many more of the things they have to offer like El Olivo (their restaurant) and their Spa. Plus, we still have a few more of their activities to try out like their Sculpture Class and many walks and water activities too. Stay tuned though for an in depth look of all the activities we did get up to…
